2019 Pontevedra ITU Multisport World Championship
27 April – 4 May 2019
Pontevedra, in the northwest of Spain will host the world's largest Multisport Festival from 27 April-4 May 2019.
Pontevedra – the city
Pontevedra is the capital of the “Rias Baixas”. A stately city teeming with life, with the largest Old Town in Galicia, after Santiago. Built with patience through centuries, this “boa vila”, with its delicious streets and squares named after the typical guilds, full of cult and popular architecture buildings, possesses one of the most beautiful and best preserved historical collections of Galicia.
In Pontevedra everything is just a step away and there is so much to see, genuine treasures such as the collection of gold and silver pieces in the Museum of Pontevedra, unique in Europe, with magnificent collection of Celtic jewellery. And other jewels such as the “da Ferrería” square, the Church of “Santa María”, ruins of “Santo Domingo” and the Church of “San Bartolomé”. Parks, tree-lined avenues, walks by the river in the middle of the city and a historic centre that, after that of Santiago, is Galicia’s most important. Inhabited stone houses with coats of arms on their façades, fountains and gardens, squares that are full of life and pavement cafés with a lively atmosphere that lasts until the early hours.
Besides, in recent years Pontevedra has become almost completely a pedestrian city, where you can take long walks, rest in the parks and squares, or enjoy a snack, a coffee or a drink in any of the crowded bars.
Visitors to Pontevedra should not leave without walking along the banks of the River Lérez, recently recuperated for leisure use by city dwellers, offering walkers a highly evocative experience, with quiet stretches that have an almost dreamlike quality.
The northern bank has the best areas for a peaceful stroll, including the “Illa das Esculturas” offering walks that combine nature and culture. This seven hectare island contains a varied list of works by renowned Galician and foreign sculptors, set in a natural space of great ecological value.

Official Tri Travel Packages
Challenges of getting to Pontevedra
Pontevedra as the venue 2019 for the ITU Multisport Championship has logistical challenges of getting there with your bike. For this reason, we have put three packages together so we can best cater for different requirements.
Pontevedra is 593km from Madrid which is its closest major International Airport and the drive is over challenging terrain. There are flights that go from Madrid to Pontevedra but these flights will only have limited capacity when it comes to carrying bikes, so to ensure your bike arrives in time for your event we have included in 2 of our package’s a transport truck that will take your bike from Madrid to Pontevedra, while you fly. We have done this in the past with other destinations that have also had this challenge to ensure that the New Zealand team’s equipment arrives in time for you to set up and prepare the best way you can for your event.
To ensure that we can do this seamlessly, a night in Madrid at a hotel located close to the airport in both directions has been included in the package.
For those of you who want to meet us in Madrid then you would make your own way to the Madrid Airport hotel and we will collect your bike there at a nominated time on the 24th April and transport it to Pontevedra. The same will work for the reverse, we will collect your bikes from the Pontevedra hotel and transport them back to the Madrid Airport hotel where you will overnight and catch your return flight to NZ the next morning.
Our recommendation is for you to take one of our packages that include the transportation of your bike to Pontevedra. There is a land only package option which includes accommodation in Pontevedra only for those of you who want to meet us there, this does not include any bike transport or Madrid accommodation and associated transfers.
Pontevedra is a beautiful town and the city is ideally sized for walking, and nearly all the items of historical/artistic interest are within easy walking distance of the city centre, right in front of the Capilla de la Peregrina. Local buses are available and reasonably priced, and taxis are plentiful.
The team hotel Rias Bajas is located close to all facilities and you will be able to walk/bike to the transition area.
